-FrInkO-

Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork. Joe Allen Jersey .com) - In a matchup of two top defensive teams in the country, No. 25 Utah got a resume-building win on Wednesday night and ended eighth-ranked Wichita States 35-game regular-season winning streak. Brandon Taylor scored 17 points to lead the Runnin Utes to a 69-68 overtime win over the Shockers. Wichita State, playing in its first true road game of the season, last lost a regular season contest on March 2, 2013 in a 91-79 decision at Creighton. Delon Wright tallied 13 points and freshman Jakob Poeltl notched 12 points and 11 rebounds for Utah (6-1), which ran its own winning streak to five games and defeated a Top-10 team for the first time since a victory over No. 1 Alabama on Dec. 30, 2002. Ron Baker and Tekele Cotton supplied 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Shockers (4-1). Fred VanVleet, who started the game 1-for-10 from the floor, finished with 13 points on 5-of-19 shooting. Dakarai Tuckers jumper and Wrights 3-pointer gave the Utes a 65-61 lead with 2 1/2 to go in the extra session. Evan Wessel answered with a 3 of his own, then had a big block before making a pair of free throws to push the Shockers in front by one with 1:08 left. Taylor banked a layup high off the glass to swing the edge back in Utahs favor, but Baker made a tough layup at the other end for a 68-67 lead. Out of a timeout, Wright worked on the smaller VanVleet and made the short jumper to keep the pendulum swinging. VanVleet was fouled with 7.5 seconds left, but missed the front end of the 1- and-1. Wessel stormed in for the rebound, missed the putback and Chris Reyes hauled in the miss for the hosts. Poeltl came down with Reyes miss on the front end of his 1-and-1, but Poeltl then missed both of his free throws as the Shockers got the ball back with 1.4 seconds left. VanVleets heave beyond halfcourt was well off the mark and the Utes held on. Tucker and Taylor hit consecutive 3-pointers to stretch the Utah lead to 57-46 at 5:17 of the second half. The Utes proceeded to take their foot off the gas and get sloppy with the ball in the closing minutes to allow the Shockers back into the game. VanVleet shook off his rough night and made a 3 when it mattered most, cutting the margin to four with over a minute left. Utah was then called for a five- second violation on the ensuing inbound pass, and Cotton knocked down a trey to close within one. Brekkott Chapman committed a turnover on the next inbound pass to set up VanVleets triple that capped a 14-1 run that gave the visitors a 60-58 lead. Tucker converted a pair of free throws at the other end to tie the game with 18.9 seconds left. VanVleets deep 3 from the wing was long and the game headed to overtime. Utah took its first lead of the night when Chapman nailed a 3-pointer with under 14 minutes remaining in the second half to make it 39-36. Rian Holland countered with a trey of his own, and the three-point barrage continued with Tucker hitting a shot from beyond arc on the ensuing possession. Earlier, Cotton hit back-to-back 3-pointers over a minute span as Wichita State jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Poeltl then scored five his teams next seven points to help the Utes cut the deficit to 10-7 with 13:42 remaining in the first half. Cottons layup late in the half made it an eight-point game with 3:16 to play. Utah pitched a shutout the rest of the way as it closed to within 33-29 at the break. Game Notes Utah improved to 7-1 all-time against Wichita State. The Shockers are 0-5 in Salt Lake City ... This was the first meeting between the two schools since 1991 ... Wichita State also had its 13-game road winning streak snapped ... The Utes made 47 percent of their shots and limited Wichita State to 38 percent shooting ... The Shockers scored 14 points off turnovers. Joe Ledley Jersey . The result was a game-winning, power-play goal. Chiasson snapped a third-period tie and lifted the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory on Monday night. The traditional pre-Masters event was halted early due to inclement weather. Harrington, who tied for first in 2003 and won in 2004, became the first three-time champion of the event.PITTSBURGH -- Jon Jay already had a bat in hand before St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny even called his name. A minute later the veteran outfielder was standing on second base after his pinch hit tied the game. Jay didnt stay there long, racing home with the go-ahead run on Matt Hollidays sharp single in a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. "He just sensed," Matheny said of Jays precocious grab of the bat. "We hadnt had any interaction at that point. Hes smart, he knows the game." And the Cardinals know a thing or two about coming through late. St. Louis scored all three runs off reliever Jared Hughes (6-4) with two outs in the seventh inning to back John Lackey and send the scuffling Pirates to their seventh loss in 10 games. Lackey (2-1) worked out of trouble early to last seven innings in his second victory for the Cardinals after arriving in a trade from Boston on July 31. He was 11-7 with the Red Sox. Trevor Rosenthal gave up a leadoff home run in the ninth to Andrew McCutchen but held on to earn his 39th save. "I think guys know when we have a pitcher like Lackey on the mound, hes going to keep us in the game," Matheny said. "Weve just got to keep fighting and figure out a way to get something going." Pedro Alvarez hit his 18th homer in the second off Lackey, but the Pirates managed little after that to fall further behind St. Louis and first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central race. Pirates starter Francisco Liriano overwhelmed St. Louis for six-plus innings before leaving after Kolten Wongs infield single led off the seventh. Hughes came on and promptly picked off Wong. Things didnt work out so well for the normally dependable right-hander, however, when he went to the plate. Tony Cruz started the game-changing rally by turning an 0-2 count into a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sharply hit single by Jay. Holliday then gave St. Louis the lead with a grounder past shortstop Jordy Mercer. St. Louis has 209 RBIs this season with two outs, tops in the National League. "It was just a night where (Hughes) couldnt get the ball where he wanted to go," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. The cushion was more than enough for Lackey, who had little trouble after navigating a choppy second inning. Alvarez hit a long home run to centre with one out, annd infield hits by Starling Marte and Jordy Mercer followed. Joe Ledley Wales Jersey. The runners moved up on a sacrifice by Liriano, but Josh Harrisons sharply hit fly to left went right to Holliday. Lackey settled down following the reprieve, not allowing a runner past first base over his final five innings. He walked one and struck out three to improve to 3-0 against National League teams this season. "I think Tony and I made some good adjustments after the first time through the lineup," Lackey said. "The last three innings were as good as I felt." OUCH Cardinals 1B Matt Adams spent the last four innings with cotton stuffed in his nose following a nasty collision with the fence down the right-field line. St. Louis backup outfielder Shane Robinson left in the top of the ninth after injuring his left arm while trying to steal second. Matheny said Robinson was "in pretty bad shape" and might have to return to St. Louis for further examination. TRAINERS ROOM Cardinals: C Yadier Molina and RHP Michael Wacha will head to Double-A Springfield this week to begin rehab assignments. Molina has been on the disabled list since tearing a ligament in his right thumb July 10 and will go through a full workout with Springfield on Tuesday. If he makes it through without a problem, Molina will likely play on Wednesday and could be back with the Cardinals before rosters expand on Sept. 1. Wacha hasnt pitched since heading to the DL in mid-June with a stress reaction in his right shoulder. He is scheduled to throw batting practice Wednesday and will make at least one minor league rehab start before being activated. "Its a great step forward," Matheny said about the progress of both players. "Obviously, well see how they both feel after they get an opportunity to get into a game. Its definitely good news." Pirates: RHP Charlie Morton, on the 15-day DL since Aug. 20 with a sports hernia in his right hip, threw a bullpen session and will start for Double-A Altoona on Thursday. Morton will work five innings or 75 pitches. UP NEXT Cardinals: RHP Lance Lynn (14-8, 2.78 ERA) will look to remain unbeaten in August. Lynn is 3-0 with a 1.75 ERA in four starts this month. Pirates: RHP Gerrit Cole (7-4, 3.69 ERA) tries for his first victory since July 4. Cole is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA in two regular-season starts against the Cardinals. ' ' '
