-FrInkO-

CHICAGO - The hard-hit grounder went right to shortstop Starlin Castro, and he made a strong throw to first. Fjällräven Kånken Stor . It was just too late to get Gregory Polanco. The play proved costly when Josh Harrison followed with a two-run homer, sending Castro and the Chicago Cubs to a rain-delayed 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night. "It was a bad bounce," Castro said. "I had to turn around. It was really hard, too, and the guy run pretty hard from home plate, thats why I didnt get him." Jordy Mercer went deep for the second straight day and Andrew McCutchen had a tiebreaking RBI single for Pittsburgh, which had lost four of five. Vance Worley (1-0) pitched into the seventh inning for his first win with the Pirates. Harrisons fifth homer with two out in the seventh made it 5-2 and came after Polanco was the beneficiary of baseballs replay system. He was originally called out by umpire James Hoye in a close play at first after he hustled down the line on his sharp grounder. "The play was a hard-hit ball to Starlin, who came up slower than he probably should have," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "Polanco is busting his rear end down the line." The review also extended Polancos hit streak to 11 games, making him the first NL player to begin his major league career with such a streak since Juan Pierre hit in 16 straight games for Colorado in 2000. "He looked safe, so you go out and you have your people run the replay," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "As sure as you are, you dont know until you know. It turned out to play very big for us." Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer for Chicago, which had won four of five. Eli Whiteside doubled home Darwin Barney in the seventh. "The guys keep battling, they keep playing," Renteria said. The start of the game was delayed for 2 hours, 1 minute while a storm passed through the area. Rizzos 15th homer, a drive to the bleachers in right in the fourth, gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead. The big first baseman, making a case for a spot on the NL All-Star team, is batting .318 (27 for 85) with seven homers and 19 RBIs in his last 23 games. Pittsburgh responded in the fifth. With two outs and runners on first and second, Harrison and McCutchen each singled back up the middle to put the Pirates back in front. Brian Schlitter then replaced Travis Wood with runners on the corners and retired Russell Martin on a bouncer to third for the final out. Wood (7-6) allowed four hits, walked three and struck out four. The left-hander had won each of his last two starts, including a season-high eight innings of three-hit ball in a 3-0 victory at Philadelphia in his previous outing. "We got a little wild for a little bit, brought the ball up a little bit where they could find some holes and put some runs on the board," Wood said. Worley gave up three runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. The righty, who was acquired in a March 25 trade with Minnesota, pitched seven shutout innings in his first start of the season last Sunday at Miami. "Used all his pitches, pounded the strike zone, gave us a real good effort," Hurdle said. Jared Hughes got the final out of the seventh, Tony Watson tossed a perfect eighth and Mark Melancon struck out the side for his 11th save in 14 chances. It was Melancons first opportunity since Hurdle announced on Friday he was removing struggling righty Jason Grilli from the closer role. The Pirates played without speedy outfielder Starling Marte, who left the team to attend to a personal matter in his native Dominican Republic. Jose Tabata got the start in left and went 0 for 3 with a walk. Hurdle said he thinks Marte will be back in time for Monday nights game at Tampa Bay. NOTES: Cubs C Welington Castillo (rib injury) went 1 for 5 and drove in a run in his first rehab game with Triple-A Iowa on Friday. "Felt good, and he continues to progress," Renteria said before Saturdays game. ... Cubs RHP Jason Hammel (6-4, 3.02 ERA) faces RHP Brandon Cumpton (2-2, 5.82 ERA) in the series finale on Sunday. Fjällräven Mini Kånken Rea . Carey Price made 27 saves for Montreal (30-21-6) for his fourth shutout of the year and second in four games. David Desharnais added an empty netter for the Canadiens. Reto Berra stopped 25 shots for Calgary (21-28-7). Kånken Mini Ryggsäck . According to TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug, agent Rick Valette met with Oilers senior VP of hockey operations Scott Howson and general manager Craig MacTavish on Monday to kick off the talks. http://www.fjallravenkankensverige.com/ .Y. - Brooklyn Nets centre Brook Lopez has a strained lower back and will miss at least a week.DENVER - The Toronto Maple Leafs filed into their locker room after the first period and saw Daniel Winnik walking around and feeling fine. That sight softened the blow of what ended up as a 4-3 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.Knowing their teammate was fine after a scary headfirst fall in the opening minute of the game helped calm the Maple Leafs. They rallied to tie the score late but Colorados three shooters scored in the shootout to end a three-game losing streak. He was in the room when we come off the ice, Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. He was walking around, hes fine. Its one of those situations where youre expecting a lot worse and he isnt any worse for wear.Alex Tanguay also scored in regulation and had the decisive goal in the shootout. Nathan MacKinnon had the other shootout goal and Nick Holden scored his first goal of the season. We wanted it tonight. We need to want it more than the other team, said Matt Duchene, who had one of the shootout goals to go with one in regulation. Thats what we did last year. Its been tough at times this year, thats when you really have to be a man and step up and make it happen.Reto Berra had 33 saves through overtime in his first start in six games. Its an important win for us. We had a great game, an outstanding start of the game, coach Patrick Roy said. We were outstanding with 12 shots in the first 10 minutes. Plenty of good chances and looks at the net and their goalie had plenty of good saves. That was overshadowed by Winniks injury suffered when he collided with Avalanche defenceman Jan Hejda near the Colorado blue line. He fell awkwardly on the right side of his head and shoulder and flipped onto his front. He lay motionless while trainers from both teams secured him on a backboard and took him off the ice.The team reported on Twitter that Winnik was alert and moving all of his extremities while being examined by the team doctor. The team said Winnik was not transported to the hospital but he did not return. That was one of the most scary things Ive been a part of and watched live, Toronto defenceman Dion Phaneuf said. Anytime a teammate gets hurt its something that effects you, but when you see the stretcher come out and hes motionless thats something you dont want to go through as a team. Were really happy to see him uup walking around and he seems to be fine. Kånken Big Sverige. Tyler Bozak scored in regulation and had Torontos only goal in the shootout. Phil Kessel and Richard Panik also scored for the Maple Leafs.Duchene gave Colorado a 3-2 lead with a wraparound goal at 11:45 of the third. Toronto pulled goalie Jonathan Bernier with 1:29 left and Panik scored 16 seconds later on a shot off defenceman Nate Guenins skate to send it to overtime.Bernier finished with 31 saves. It seems like thats our luck this year, Duchene said. We do so much to score and we cant get anything to go, we only get a few to go and they pull the goalie and we have guys in great position and it hits (Guenins skate) and goes in. It was going four feet wide.Winniks injury came immediately after Holden scored 31 seconds into the game to give the Avalanche an early lead for the second straight game.Toronto was able to overcome Winniks injury and get back in the game. Kessel tied it with his seventh of the season when he batted a puck out of the air and past Berra with 3:40 left in the period. The next few shifts youre trying to get back into it, Phaneuf said.Bozak gave Toronto the lead when he scored a power-play goal at 4:43 of the second. Colorado had killed off 29 consecutive penalties before Bozaks tally. Tanguay responded a minute later when he got a stretch pass from Zach Redmond behind the Maple Leafs defence and beat Bernier on a breakaway.Toronto controlled play in the final minutes of the second. The Leafs nearly scored when the puck went under Berra and stopped in the crease but was lost under a pile of bodies.Toronto then held the puck in Colorados zone for nearly two minutes but couldnt score.Toronto lost defenceman Jake Gardiner later in the first when he took a puck off his right leg and missed the rest of the game. Team officials said he suffered a lower body injury. He has a deep bone bruise. Its not broken, Carlyle said. Hit him in the spot with equipment.NOTES: The NHL suspended Toronto RW Carter Ashton for 20 games without pay on Thursday after failing a drug test. Based on his salary, Ashton will forfeit $169,185. ... Avalanche D Brad Stuart (hamstring) will miss at least two weeks. ... Maple Leafs D Morgan Rielly was scratched. ... Colorado RW Daniel Briere was a healthy scratch for the fifth straight game. ' ' '
